Motorcycle Insurance Basics

Becoming a motorcycle owner can be a very exciting life choice. You can imagine yourself riding the open road on a Sunday morning with the wind in your hair or taking a relaxing road trip to meet friends. Perhaps owning a motorcycle may be a convenient low-cost way for you to get to and from work. Whatever your reason, you do have to consider what it takes to own one, from licensing, registration, and maintenance, to, of course, insurance. These are just the basics. You also need sound and accurate information to make good choices.

The requirements for licensing and registering any vehicle can differ from state to state. Most states require that you obtain a Class M-1 license to drive your motorcycle legally. Like any other driver’s license, you need to contact your local DMV to take driving and written tests. You’ll also need to register your motorcycle and buy insurance for it. Please note that most states do require proof of insurance to register a motorcycle. Many insurance companies require you to present your motorcycle driver’s license before insuring your motorcycle.

Motorcycle safety gear is also equally important, and your state may have helmet laws to help protect you in case you’re involved in an accident. It’s important that you read up on your state’s laws to make sure that you are following all of them completely.
